In his teaching titled ‘How to Chart Your Course for Greatness’, the man of God, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, instructed young people to hear the cry of the needy and respond to it. Motivated by this admonishing, youth from Christ Embassy Lagos Zone 2, South-West Nigeria, seized the International Youth Day celebrations as an opportunity to offer voluntary services to their community.
International Youth Day, celebrated annually on August 12, is a day set aside by the United Nations to organize youth-oriented activities geared towards raising awareness about the state of the youth and advocating for youth involvement in policy-making across member states.
With a sense of responsibility and excitement, the youths embarked on several voluntary community services to positively impact the lives of children, youth, and women in their immediate environment. Some of the services rendered were free skill acquisition training in catering, fashion design and beauty. They also carried out community sanitation exercises in 50 public locations such as marketplaces, hospitals, schools, and the local council area, making the environment cleaner, safe and healthy for residents. Over 6,000 copies of the Rhapsody TeeVo were distributed during this exercise, and cells have been pioneered across the catchment area.
A special ‘Celebration of Light’ program was organized on Saturday, August 17, to conclude the week-long activities marking the International Youth Day 2019 in the zone. Youths from churches across the zone converged for this exclusive time of celebration with the Word, music, talk shows, dance, and diverse display of talents. The event recorded an attendance of 8,189 youth, 2903 first timers and 1,097 new converts.
The 2019 International Youth Day Celebration in Lagos Zone 2 was phenomenal, as inspiring youth used the occasion to give back to their community and reach out to their peers with the Word, birthing new souls.
