On March 6th, the Volunteer Medical Corps, a registered non-profit organization and a member agency of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International, donated medical equipment to the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Ugbowo, Edo State, in support of their care for cancer patients in the hospital’s Oncology department.
The Senior Executive Officer of the NGO, Dr. Olajumoke Akisanya, presented cash endowments to the cancer patients, who were on admission in the Oncology wards on behalf of the Chairperson of the Volunteer Medical Corps, Dr. Deola Phillips. The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Prof. Casmir Omuemu, received the gifts on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki. Expressing appreciation for the gifts worth millions of Naira, Prof. Omuemu said, “We are very grateful for the donation that was done today; you know cancer care is something that really takes a lot of money. It takes a lot out of the patient, and there is no way that individuals can handle it alone. We really appreciate this kind of gesture, and we call on other well-meaning Nigerians to do the same thing. It will really go a long way to alleviate the suffering of these brothers and sisters who have cancer. On behalf of the management of the hospital, I want to say a very big thank you to the Volunteer Medical Corps and to the man of God, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.”
The donations were given as part of the activities of the VMC’s "Light of Hope Project," a campaign designed to raise awareness about cancer and its risk factors, and to promote healthier life choices and relevant cancer-related screening among the populace. Through the Light of Hope Project, volunteers with the Volunteer Medical Corps have carried out hundreds of humanitarian acts to demonstrate love and compassion for those living with cancer by presenting hundreds of them with gifts and Christian literature, with the aim of inspiring in them; hope for life.
